Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth and are designed to blend in with your other teeth. They are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile. In fact, the development and use of implants is one of the biggest advances in dentistry in the past 40 years. Dental implants are made up of titanium and are compatible with the human body. They are posts that are surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw, where they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth.

Most patients find that a dental implant is secure, stable and a good replacement for their own tooth.

There are generally three phases to getting an implant:

  • First, the periodontist or oral surgeon places the implant into the jawbone.

  • Next, the bone around the implant heals in a process called osseointegration. Osseointegration means “combines with the bone” and it’s a process that takes time. Patients might need to wait until the implant is completely integrated, up to several months, before replacement teeth can be attached to the implant.

  • Finally, it’s time for the placement of the artificial tooth/teeth. For a single tooth implant, we will customize a new tooth for you, called a dental crown. The crown will be custom fabricated and designed to blend in with your other teeth. If you are replacing more than a single tooth, custom-made bridges or dentures will be made to fit your mouth and your implants. The replacement teeth usually take some time to make. In the meantime, we may give you a temporary denture to help you eat and speak normally until the permanent replacement is ready.

Dental implants work well because they are fused to your jawbone, thus providing stable support for artificial teeth. They allow artificial teeth to fit securely and help dentures and bridges — as well as individual crowns placed over implants —feel more natural than conventional bridges or dentures.

For some, regular bridges and dentures are simply not comfortable or, for various reasons, even possible. Additionally, ordinary bridges are attached to teeth on either side of the space left by the missing tooth. Implants need no attachments to adjacent teeth so it’s not required to have other teeth ground down to hold your new replacement tooth/teeth in place.

Are Dental Implants Right For You?

In order to qualify for implants, you must have healthy gums and sufficient bone in your jaw to support the implant. You must also keep these structures healthy. Oral hygiene and regular dental visits are essential to the long-term success of dental implants. With routine care, studies indicate that implants can last up to 25 years!
